Dear I.S. 24 Families and Students,
I hope this letter finds you well as we enter the last two weeks of December and 2022.
We have come to realize there was a calculation error in the "weighted average" of the student report cards distributed on December 2, 2022. On Monday, December 12, 2022, a new report card will be distributed to every student to bring home. No actual subject class grades earned by students have changed.
The updated report card will display the same class grades but the calculation to determine a "weighted average" will be different in some cases. As you know, some classes meet eight times a week and some only three or five times a week and the calculation the NYC Department of Education was permitting us to use when creating a total average was entered inaccurately as each course has a different credit weight. We have corrected this error at this time.
A corrected report card was necessary to be issued at this time for maintaining accuracy around student performance and accuracy of records.
For your own knowledge and understanding we have shared the breakdown below regarding credit weights.
ELA, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies- Credit Weight of 1.0
Talent Classes- Credit Weight of .75
World Language- Credit Weight of .75
Any minor/Elective- Credit Weight of .75
Physical Education is not calculated into the total weighted average for a student.
For a student in Grade 8 Honors only due to courses ending in a Regents exam:
ELA- Credit Weight of 1.0
Algebra I, Living Environment, US History, World Language Proficiency- Credit Weight of 1.05
Talent Classes- Credit Weight of .75
Physical Education is not calculated into the total weighted average for a student.
We apologize for the inaccuracy in the original report card issued on December 2nd. The Credit Weight shared here will be in place for the second and final marking period and in future years unless a change is necessary.
Sincerely,
Lenny Santamaria
Principal
