New York state Education Department will be required to administer exams to students this Spring

Dear I.S. 24 Families,

I am sharing information with you at this time so you can make a decision that is best for your child(ren). It has become apparent the New York state Education Department will be required to administer exams to students this Spring. The full testing calendar will be shared on our website shortly.

Schools will not be able to administer any of this year’s state assessments remotely,  they will be “school-based” and “in-person" only. Students receiving full-time remote instruction are not expected to come into a school building to participate in test administrations as part of the New York State Grade 6-8 ELA, Mathematics and/or Grade 8 Science exam.

The New York State Education Department does not dispute a parent/guardian right to opt-out a student of the New York State exams but has not adopted a formal policy.  We are asking you to complete a survey between today and Monday, April 5, 2021 to decide if you will "opt-out" or allow your child(ren) to sit for the exams in ELA, Math and Science this year. With all that has taken place this year and the difficulties with moving back and forth from in-person and remote you may see this is an opportunity to not add any burden or pressure on your child.

The survey below should be filled out and provided to the school as soon as possible if your child is not taking part in the ELA , Mathematics, or Science State Exams. If we do not receive a survey response by April 5, 2021 we will assume your child will take part in the exams. Families with a Grade 8 student who is scheduled to sit for a Regents exam in Living Environment or Algebra I should wait for further details in late Spring.

Sincerely,

Lenny Santamaria
